USM Osher School of Music
MICROCOSMOS
Faculty Concert Series
A microcosm is a smaller system that reflects the characteristics of a much larger system, essentially a “little world” or a miniature version of a larger genre. Three chamber works, one idea: music that contains more than it appears to. Mozart’s Oboe Quartet is intimate on paper—four players—and enormous in practice. Beethoven’s Septet borrows the sweep of a full symphony and fits it into seven instruments. In between, a quintet by Ruth Gipps, a British composer you may not know yet, but probably should.
