“Three Told from a Passing Place” is an offering of three new folk tales for fellow siblings of the in-between. It is a spell-casting to care for our immediate future-selves to keep growing as we break things down. It is a summoning and celebration of our mythologized bodies and lives.
What happens when an artist reckons with their power to stop the world? How long can two shapeshifters chase a shared illusion? What truly matters in the revolution of one year?
Maisie Goodnight invites their audience to ponder these questions with an intimate solo shadow puppet show told through overhead projector, crankie theater, cello, and song.
Opening the night will be a short performance by the Portland-based ensemble Stop Puppeting Yourself Puppet Company.

Maisie Goodnight is a Philadelphia-based puppeteer, art teacher, and puppetry gathering organizer who works to make puppetry more connected and accessible in Philadelphia. Their educational work and event co-coordination has been supported by their peers and mentors as well as the Bartol Foundation, the Puppet Slam Network, and the Center for Cultural Vibrancy.
Goodnight’s shadows have appeared in numerous gatherings, including Nasty Brutish and Short, A Rafter of Crankies, the Philly Puppet Slam!, and Blood from a Turnip. They often teach puppetry, parade, and toy-making in partnership with Spiral Q, Asian Arts Initiative, Temple University, and Haverford College, with a focus on disrupting our day to day with play and self expression, and calling us in to our intersections for feeding our collective liberation.
Stop Puppeting Yourself Puppet Co. is a Portland-based puppetry collective born out of the puppetry practice of Elliot Nye alongside numerous friends and collaborators. The ensemble typically works with direct operated puppetry and object theater met with experimentation, onstage sound and lighting design, embodied performance, and camera/video technology.
Stop Puppeting Yourself Puppet Co. have been longtime participants in the King Friday’s Dungeon Puppet Slam at Mayo Street Arts. They recently premiered their first full-length performance, “John Toot and the Great Metastization,” which is touring this summer to Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont.
Run Time: Approximately 50 minutes, with no intermission.
STANDARD or PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN options are available online for this event. Per ticket service fee varies depending on ticket price.
