Classical Dimensions

PCM

This concert unfolds as a carefully structured journey that highlights the trumpet’s expressive range, technical brilliance, and strong cultural identity. Bringing together Brazilian rhythmic vitality, French elegance, and contemporary American lyricism, the program invites both seasoned listeners and newcomers to experience the trumpet as a versatile and deeply communicative voice.

The program opens with the Concertino for Trumpet and Piano by José Ursicino da Silva (Duda), a work that immediately establishes the energetic and expressive spirit of the evening. Framed by lively outer movements and a lyrical central section, the piece blends brilliance, clarity, and rhythmic drive, offering a compelling introduction to the trumpet’s virtuosic and singing qualities, strongly rooted in Brazilian musical language.

This is followed by the Sonate by Jean Hubeau, a cornerstone of the trumpet repertoire. Its three contrasting movements—Sarabande, Intermède, and Spiritual—combine classical structure with jazz-influenced harmonies and a profound sense of introspection. The sonata reveals a more nuanced and expressive side of the instrument, balancing rhythmic subtlety with emotional depth.

After intermission, the program turns toward a more concise and contemporary expression with Caprice by Joseph Turrin. Energetic and playful, the work highlights agility, spontaneity, and rhythmic precision, offering a lively contrast to the larger forms heard earlier in the program.

Next, A Song from the Heart by Eric Ewazen provides a moment of lyrical reflection. Known for its warmth and expressive sincerity, the piece emphasizes the trumpet’s vocal quality and emotional intimacy, inviting the audience into a more personal and contemplative sound world.

The concert concludes with Duda’s Fantasia Carnavalesca, a vibrant and celebratory work inspired by the spirit of Carnival. Rhythmic energy, expressive freedom, and technical brilliance come together in a joyful finale that leaves a lasting impression of Brazilian musical color and vitality.

Taken as a whole, the program unfolds like a musical drama infused with lyric romance and festive celebration—a concert designed not only to showcase the trumpet’s versatility, but to create a meaningful and engaging connection with the audience.
