Music by Quincy Porter, Paul Seitz, and Paul Hindemith, with special guest Michael Lund Ziegler
This free concert highlights a lesser known instrument and sonority, promising an enthralling journey through the many voices of the viola. Porter’s suite opens with a blend of elegance and modern American charm—at times serene and lyrical, at others, rhythmically alive and bursting with character. Each movement unfolds like a story, showcasing the viola’s warm, soulful tone alongside flashes of brilliance.
In contrast, Hindemith’s sonata is a bold, exhilarating ride through 20th-century innovation. From its reflective and heavy opening to its fierce, high-octane 4th movement, the sonata reveals the viola’s versatility as both a lyrical storyteller and a force of power. The finale leaves listeners with a haunting stillness, offering a moment of contemplation after the sonata’s earlier stormy intensity.
Expect a dynamic show where the viola takes center stage—moving effortlessly between introspection, energy, and bold musical statements.
