Tony Malaby, Saxophone
Eric Hofbauer. Guitar
Max Goldman, Drums
In his two decades as an integral member of New York City’s improvised music community, saxophonist and composer Tony Malaby has emerged as a wholly unique and singular voice. DownBeat’s “80 Coolest Things in Jazz” article said “[Malaby] is a formidably accomplished soprano and tenor saxophonist with enviable tone and an endless font of compelling ideas [who] steers his music away from perfection” and “his considerable gifts as a melodist tend to sneak up on you.” JazzTimes called him “a hero of today’s improvised music scene.” These accolades are unsurprising given the number of projects Malaby has been involved in since arriving in New York in the early 1990s.
“Eric Hofbauer has become a significant force in Boston’s improvised-music scene,” declares Stereophile’s David R. Adler. “His aesthetic evokes old blues, Americana, Tin Pan Alley, bebop, and further frontiers. There’s a rule-breaking spirit but also an impeccable rigor, a foundation of sheer chops and knowledge, that put Hofbauer in the top tier of guitarists,” he writes. Hofbauer has been an integral member of Boston’s jazz scene as a musician, bandleader, organizer and educator for the past twenty five years. He has performed and recorded alongside such notable collaborators as Han Bennink, Roy Campbell, Jr., John Tchicai, Garrison Fewell, Cecil McBee, George Garzone, Sean Jones, John Fedchock, Steve Swell and Matt Wilson.
Max Goldman has made a living as a freelance musician, touring regularly around Europe, Russia and the United States in addition to appearing regularly in some of New York City’s top venues in both the jazz and popular music worlds with projects such as, The Elan Mehler Group, The Danny Fox Trio, Old Time Musketry, Tim Berne, Midnight Magic and Aella and has recorded and shared the stage with many artists, including, Becca Stevens, Chris Tordini, Travis Reuter, Curtis Macdonald, Nomi Ruiz, Eleanor Friedberger, and for the new masters of Sesame Street composer, Joe Raposo’s songs.
