To celebrate three quarters of a century spinning through space, flutist and guitarist Carl Dimow will be performing with his friends and bandmates from four ensembles, playing jazz, klezmer, Brazilian choro and more jazz.
Dimow has been a mainstay of the Maine music scene for half a century. He is noted for his diverse interests and his ongoing pursuit of creativity and musical growth – always striving to create music that speaks to and engages his audience. Besides his ongoing projects, Dimow is often called on to add his musical voice to collaborations and special projects – with poets, dancers, and other musicians.
This concert will feature short sets with four different ensembles – and possible special guests. The musicians include faculty members from Berklee, Colby, Bates and Bowdoin Colleges. The ensembles are:
Elements Trio – performing original compositions and music from Thelonious Monk, Paul Motian, Connie Converse and others. The Elements Trio are noted for their ability to be creative in the moment.
Casco Bay Tummlers – Carl’s been performing klezmer with the Tummlers for over thirty years. The band is known for their inspiring and soulful performances that range from traditional klezmer to related roots genres – to original music that stretches those boundaries.
Choro Louco – performs the enormously appealing Brazilian music genre known as choro. The band was formed in 2013 by a group of accomplished musicians who have all established themselves as virtuosos in other genres – ranging from classical music and jazz, to Celtic, klezmer and Middle Eastern music.
Carl Dimow Jazz Quartet – This quartet is rooted in classic jazz, but also features some of Carl’s original compositions – all while exploring the beautiful possibilities of the flute and bass flute as lead instruments in jazz.
