Dimensions in Jazz

This event has passed.

One ticket, two shows!
Bedlam & Eunoia open the evening with world, classical, and film-score inspired, genre-defying chamber jazz. Then stay for Sad Bastards, Loose Standards, as they blend “Saturday Night” and “Sunday Morning” vibes.

Bedlam & Eunoia:
Barry Saunders,
soprano saxophone and clarinet
Carl Dimow, flutes
Michael Beling, keyboards and pedal bass
Eric LaPerna, riqq and dumbek

Formed in April 2017, Bedlam & Eunoia draws on Michael Beling’s unique compositional style, jazz training, and ability to play pedal bass and piano simultaneously, paired with Eric LaPerna’s extensive knowledge of Middle Eastern percussion, and Barry Saunders’ serious jazz and classical experience on clarinet and saxophone. Carl joined in Spring 2023 and his diverse musical background including classical, jazz, klezmer, and Middle Eastern music allowed him to seamlessly fit into the ensemble. The musicians demonstrate a highly symbiotic and sensitive rapport, and their history and ease of playing together is readily apparent.

Sad Bastards, Loose Standards:
Chris Klaxton,
trumpet
Mike Effenberger, piano

SBLS aims to provide audiences with a proper blend of “Saturday Night” and “Sunday Morning”, bridging the gap from The Club to The Church, thereby extending an invitation to share sacred moments, whether through traditional jazz standards, the music of today, spirituals and hymns, or the Avant Garde. Area men Chris Klaxton and Mike Effenberger join forces to plumb the depths of the great American songbook of jazz standards, the lesser American songbook, spirituals, new standards, and the good and bad news of this post-tonal musical world. “To plumb the depths” comes from the concept of lowering a lead weight into the ocean on a long rope to establish the water’s distance downward. To do so, one would be required to drop the weight to the very bottom, extending the line entirely until the answer is found. May it be so.
